Lok Sabha Election

Chandigarians Vote – Kiron Kher and Gul Panag Cannot Vote

Chandigarians are voting today for the Lok Sabha elections. 6.13 lakh voters of Chandigarh will decide the fate of 17 candidates in the Union Territory. The major players in this are Pawan Kumar Bansal, Kiron Kher, Gul Panag and Jannat Jahan. The irony of the situation is that although Pawan Kumar Bansal and Jannat Jahan will be voting in Chandigarh today, Kiron Kher and Gum Panag cannot vote.

Kiron Kher of the BJP is registered as a voter in Mumbai, and Gul Panag of the Aam Aadmi Party is registered as a voter in Punjab. Well, they are down by their own votes, it seems :).

The 2014 Chandigarh Lok Sabha election was held on April 10, 2014. In that election, Pawan Kumar Bansal (Congress) and Jannat Jahan (BSP) were both candidates, while Kirron Kher (BJP) and Gul Panag (AAP) were not.

Here’s a breakdown of the candidates and their eligibility to vote in the 2014 Chandigarh Lok Sabha election:

  1. Pawan Kumar Bansal (Congress): He was a sitting MP and eligible to vote in Chandigarh. Pawan Kumar Bansal was a candidate in the 2014 Chandigarh Lok Sabha election, representing the Indian National Congress (INC). He lost the election to Kirron Kher, who represented the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
  2. Jannat Jahan (BSP): She was a candidate and eligible to vote in Chandigarh. As I know, Jannat Jahan was not a candidate in the 2014 Chandigarh Lok Sabha election. A candidate named Jannat Jahan-Ul-Haq contested the election from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and secured 3.51% of the votes.
  3. Kirron Kher (BJP): She was not a candidate and did not have a voter ID card registered in Chandigarh then. Therefore, she was not eligible to vote in Chandigarh.
  4. Gul Panag (AAP): She was a candidate and eligible to vote in Chandigarh. Gul Panag, not Gum Panag, contested the 2014 Chandigarh Lok Sabha election from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). She secured 23.97% of the votes and finished third.
